Some information one the photographs as requested: ¨ 203 # 1161565 - (blue) ¨ left the factory on 25/10/1950 ¨ sold by Stanley Motors in Johannesburg early 1951 although papers indicate that the 203 was first registered on 1/1/1950 in the Union of South Africa, which is obviously not correct ¨ second owner bought the car from widow of first owner in 1996 ¨ I am the third owner and bought the 203 in February 1999 in Witbank (Mpumalanga) ¨ Original color was light blue with gold trimmings e.g. pressed parts of doors above upholstery and dashboard. From what I could find out, the 203 was resprayed to navy blue during the late '70's ¨ Original light grey leather upholstery, door panels and roof still in good condition ¨ Rear carpets to be replaced ¨ Underbody/floors in exceptional good condition - no rust whatsoever - to all probability the 203 stood in a covered garage all these years ¨ Mechanical restoration to date: all suspension bushes replaced, front shock absorbers overhauled, brakes overhauled, cylinder head replaced, timing chain replaced etc ¨ Further mechanical restoration planned: gearbox overhaul, engine overhaul once bearings and sleeveset are obtained ¨ Bodywork overhaul planned for 2000 ¨ Photo = April 1999 ¨ Current mileage = ?
¨ 203 # 1864170 (Grey) ¨ I first saw this 203 as a 12-year-old scholar in '79, and urged my father to buy the 203 as he drove 203's for many years. Unfortunately the 203 had just been acquired by the second owner, who definitely did not want to sell the car ¨ I became friends with the 2nd owner and did some maintenance over a long period ¨ The 2nd owner eventually agreed to sell in '92 after he drove the 203 without water and oil !!! ¨ As a consequence, I had to completely overhaul the engine, as well as brakes and suspension ¨ Some bodywork damage has already been repaired, but the right rear mudguard will have to be repaired due to an unfortunate accident with the right front door opening during driving ¨ Upholstery was redone in grey vinyl in the mid 80's ¨ The photo shown myself (bearded) and a lady friend that used the 203 as a wedding car (July 1997) ¨ Current mileage = 102 000 miles
¨ 204 Coupe # 6478971(red) ¨ Bought the coupe in July 1994 ¨ Total mechanical restoration already undertaken ¨ Bodywork needs to be repainted at some stage
¨ 304 Cabriolet # 3168160(red) ¨ I saw the 304 cab in Johannesburg during 1994 at a second hand dealer who wanted a horrific price, which I could not afford. Furthermore, the 304 had been converted to 305 specifications, and looked quite horrific with alloy rims, 305 dashboard, 305 engine/gearbox and seats. ¨ After some enquiry's, I managed to trace the owner, and a deal was made. ¨ When I went to pay and fetch the 304, I was informed that the owner went bankrupt, and that all his assets (including various other cars) were to be auctioned of in Witbank ¨ Although I attended the auction, I could not afford the auction price. It was eventually sold to an Indian Gentleman who intended to restore the 304. ¨ After 11 months had passed, I phoned the new owner to find out how the restoration had commenced. To my amazement I was informed that although he had paid for the 304, he never fetched the 304, and thought it was stolen by now. ¨ After a further 5 months, and many enquiry's to the Local Council, Police, second hand dealers etc, I managed to trace the 304 two blocks from where the auction took place. ¨ By now it had been standing in the open for almost 16 months, and it looked terrible. Due to a wall being built next to the 304, the 304 was covered with cement and bricks!!! ¨ Eventually the owner was persuaded to sell and I started restoration in March 1996. ¨ With some luck, the paintwork was revitalized, but will have to totally redone at some stage. ¨ A good 304 engine/gearbox assembly was found, and all other mechanical components were overhauled including suspension, brakes etc. ¨ 504 Headlights, alloy rims, 504 homemade grille, 305 steering wheel & assembly, 305 dashboard and seats, 305 homemade clutch mechanism etc were replaced from a suitable 304 Coupe donor. ¨ Current mileage is unknown but I have done approximately 25 000 trouble free kilometers. ¨ The soft-top is non-standard and will be replaced at some stage.
¨ 404 Coupe # 4671036(maroon) ¨ I first saw the car in '90 and instantly persuaded the owner to sell. ¨ Although all paperwork tends to indicate that the 404 had only done 38 000 miles at that stage, the engine had been opened at some stage. ¨ In '92 the 404 developed clutch problems, and to my amazement it was found that a tooth on the first/reverse gear cluster was broken. This was replaced in '93. ¨ During the gearbox restoration phase, I also noted excessive crankshaft movement (approx. 9 mm) when the clutch is engaged. This problem was traced to a missing crankshaft thrust washer, and resulted in excessive bearing and crankshaft wear. Luckily, a brand new crankshaft was found, and all bearings were replaced. ¨ The previous owner (2nd owner) changed the color scheme from dark grey to maroon during the late seventies. Due to excessive paint thickness, '70's paint technology and harsh South African climate, paint cracking started to occur some years ago, which will have to be redone at some stage. ¨ Current mileage = 53 000 miles
¨ 404 Cabriolet # 4498879(white) ¨ I heard about the existence of this 404 through our local 203/403 club in '93. Due to sketchy details, it took me another year to find the owner. At this stage, the 404 was still a runner, but the owner did not want to sell. ¨ Two years later the owner phoned me and informed me of his intentions to sell. Unfortunately the original 1600 cm3 unit was replaced by a 2L 504 engine, and various other non-original items were fitted. The 404 was also a non-runner with severe gearbox & engine problems. ¨ I started a complete mechanical rebuilt in 96 which included upgrading of front drum brakes to later model disk brakes, engine-, head-, carburetor-, suspension-, and gearbox overhaul. Portions of rusted floorboards were cut out and replaced. ¨ At this stage the engine bay has been repainted, and the overhauled gearbox (Fullray floor conversion) and engine will be inserted in the near future, after which a full bodywork restoration will commence. ¨ Current mileage = unknown
¨ Photos showing 203 (1864170), 204 Cabriolet (6409277), 204 Coupe (6478971) , 404 Coupe(4498879) ¨ Taken at "CARS IN THE PARK" in August 1994 ¨ Once a year, the POMC (Pretoria Old Motor Club) hosts an open day in Silverton in Pretoria. ¨ Last year the venue attracted more than 1 500 old cars of various makes which included approximately 10 Peugeots.
¨ Apart from the above, I also own the following: 2 x 204 Coupes, 1 x 204 Cabriolet, 1x 304 Coupe, 1x 304 estate, 1 x 204 sedan (bought secondhand by my mother in 1968), 1 x 404 Cabriolet (very bad and incomplete - for spares). I can also forward you photos if required. E-Mail: Fswanepo@gpmc.org.za
